Pharming
Pharming refers to attempts by fraudsters or hackers trying to trick you to devulge
your personal information when visiting their site. They do this by redirecting website traffic
to their bogus look-alike site. A unsuspecting visitor will enter their login credentials on the
bogus site, thus enabling the fraudster or hacker to capture all your account information and
access your accounts.
Besides sending you phishing emails to induce you to reach the bogus look-alike site by
clicking on bogus links in the email, a more sophisticated, and often undetectable method,
is hacking the DNS server or substitute the DNS servers you normally use with one of theirs.
(DNS are computers responsible for resolving/translating Internet names into their real addresses).
Once you are switched over to use their DNS, they can redirect your internet traffic to a bogus look-alike,
where you're prompted to enter your account login or personal information. A common method of
switching your DNS server to one of theirs without you ever knowing is hacking into your router
and change its settings or firmware. You can access the internet as usual without any problems,
but you'll be direct to their bogus site as you try to access your bank account, for example.
Spyware removal software and anti-virus software can't protect you against pharming.
Evil Twin Attack
Evil Twin Attacks normally occurs when you're trying to access the internet through free wireless
access points (ie public hot spots), such as airports, cafe, hotels, and many other public places.
Practically every public hot spot available today is wide open and unsecured.
What a hacker or fraudster does is to use a computer to setup a bogus duplicate wireless access
point. The bogus wireless access point will have the same wireless SID (System ID) and other
system settings as the legitimate wireless access point, but it'll have a much stronger signal.
A unsuspecting customer will logon the free wireless access point with the strongest signal.
You can access the internet as usual, but all your internet traffic is routed through the hacker's or
fraudster's computer. They can track and monitor all your internet traffic, extract any
useful personal information that will enable them to commit identity fraud activities. Sophifisticated
hackers will even combine Evil Twin Attack with Pharming. That is, re-routing your website traffic
to one of their bogus look-alike site without you knowing about it.
